Why is this also a good idea for the advertiser?

Fair is fair: the motivation to make the website third-party tracking free is primarily based on consumer wishes. However, it is also a good idea for the advertiser, says Bart Zoetmulder, Commercial Director of DPG Technology: “I expect that this will decrease the number of active ad blockers and that, accordingly, the number of reachable consumers will increase significantly. In addition, the attitude towards advertising will improve considerably. Our own research has shown that 75% of visitors to Tweakers are neutral or positive about advertising, but often have an adblocker activated for privacy or security reasons.”

Interview with BNR

For many advertisers, cookies are an important part of their online revenue model. To learn more about the vision of Tweakers and DPG Technology on this topic, you should listen to BNR’s podcast De Technoloog, where Bart Zoetmulder was invited on to talk about this topic.

HTML5 creates challenges

Behind the scenes, we are continuing to work towards our ultimate goal: a completely third-party-tracking-free Tweakers. In order to achieve this, however, we still have to jump through the necessary technical hoops. The biggest challenge is displaying dynamic HTML5 banners that are guaranteed tracking cookies-free. Unlike with static banners (images), with HTML5 ads we have little or no control over what cookies and tracking an advertiser sends along in the code. Advertisers also want to be able to send a feed with prices so that the current price is displayed with the advertised product. This is only possible with HTML5 and not with static banners.

Online privacy is paramount

We continue to believe that a Tweakers without third-party tracking is the future. Online privacy is important, and users should be able to choose for themselves. Our users are tech savvy, and online privacy is probably even more important to them than to the average Dutch or Flemish person. By putting our users’ interests first, we believe our platform will become more attractive to this target group.
